Cats, Neuropathy, and Hemp Oil

Cats, like us, can experience neuropathic pain.

Generally, the origin of neuropathic pain is from an injury (or a disease) affecting the nerves of the body. In cats, neuropathic pain is often connected to diabetes.

Hemp oil may be able to help, but first let's learn more about neuropathy in our kitties.

Symptoms of Neuropathy in Cats

Neuropathy creates a constant, continuous pain in a specific area(s) of your cat’s body. Even the lightest touch could result in severe pain.

Common symptoms of feline neuropathy include:

  • Limping
  • Dragging an arm or leg
  • Loss of muscle
  • Chewing on the painful area
  • Lack of appetite
  • Vocalizations (crying/moaning)
  • Incontinence

Main Cause in Cats: Diabetes Mellitus

In cats, the most common cause of neuropathic pain is diabetes. Weakness in the hind legs is caused by high levels of sugar in the blood resulting in damaged nerves. You may notice your cat experiencing numbness and/or tingling sensations in their legs.

Hemp Oil and Feline Neuropathy

Here comes more information about inflammation. If you have been a dedicated reader on our blog, you’ll see so many issues resolved due to decrease in inflammation associated with hemp oil.

Hemp oil activates the endocannabinoid system triggering an anti-inflammatory response in your cat’s body.

Diabetes can cause constant inflammatory problems in your cat. The chronic inflammation associated with diabetes then causes damage to the blood vessels. That’s where the pain comes in. Hemp oil has been known to reduce pain as well by reducing inflammation in the body.

Since hemp oil is on the rise, scientists have been focusing on this topic for many studies. The body’s response to inflammation in the body once hemp oil is provided has led scientists to propose further study. The overall goal is to develop new solutions for diabetes involving hemp oil as part of the treatment.
