From Dull to Shine: Hemp Oil Effects on Skin and Coat Health in Dogs

As you have probably gathered by now from reading our blog, hemp oil offers an array of benefits. In this article, we will focus on how hemp oil helps improve our dog’s fur and coat health. It’s wild that hemp oil helps with so many ailments; even our dog’s fur! Let’s talk about the ‘why’ and ‘how.’ 

Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA): The Skin 'Ingredient'

For the purposes of this article, let’s just call this GLA. Your dog is able to create GLA from linoleic acid (AKA Omega-6 fats), but even dogs who appear happy and healthy may be deficient. 

GLA is a building block for hormone-like substances known as prostaglandins in your dog’s body. Prostaglandins assist in the control of inflammation in addition to assisting with every day bodily functions. 

Dogs who are deficient in GLA may develop the following condition(s):

• Allergies
• Arthritis
• Premature aging
• Diabetes
• Cancer
• Digestive problems
• Skin problems

Hemp oil contains a sufficient amount of GLA to assist in reducing the risk of developing the above conditions. As you can see, two of those conditions we are highlighting today: allergies (because they can result in skin/fur/coat problems) and skin problems themselves.

How does GLA help with skin, fur, and coat problems? GLA helps the skin remain moisturized which then leads to a smoother, shinier coat. 

Since hemp oil naturally moisturizes the skin, this also helps to thicken fur and assist with common ‘dry skin’ disorders including acne, eczema, dandruff, rashes, shedding, and hot spots.
