How Does Hemp Oil Affect Osteoarthritis in Our Pets?
The chances of your dog experiencing joint pain as a senior dog are high (or even younger if he has ever experienced any sort of injury).
Osteoarthritis: Ouch!
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease meaning, as time passes on, your pet’s cartilage that lines the ends of bones inside their joints will continuously degrade.
Signs of osteoarthritis include:
- Pain when touched in certain areas
- Walking slowly
- Stiffness in their body
- Discomfort when getting up
- Hesitance to stand and/or
- Hesitation when it comes to jumping, running, and/or going up the stairs
Osteoarthritis in Dogs
Osteoarthritis is a leading cause of decreased quality of life and pain in dogs. Over 20 percent of dogs older than one-year-old are diagnosed with osteoarthritis. One out of every 5 dogs will be diagnosed with osteoarthritis in their lifetime. That's a high risk.
All dogs are at-risk but there are some breeds who are more prone than others, including:
- German Shepherds
- Labradors
- Golden Retrievers.
Dogs who are obese are also more likely to develop osteoarthritis (perhaps even at a young age).
Can Cats Develop Osteoarthritis?
Yes, cats can develop osteoarthritis (OA). OA is not only limited to dogs.
We hear about dogs more often because they are more prone, but there are many cats (and people) who are affected by this degenerative joint disease every day.
Cats also tend to hide their pain a bit better than dogs. And, we are less likely to notice.
Let’s be honest. We are accustomed to our cats sleeping for long periods of time. It’s just in their nature. So, if our cat is continuously sleeping, we may not even think twice about it.
The best way to tell if your cat is suffering from joint pain is to watch how she jumps up and down. Is she hesitant? Is she slower than normal? Does she appear to have a different walk from time to time?Â
Hemp Oil May Help
Hemp oil contains healthy fats that are easily absorbed into your dog’s body. Easy absorption means your dog is able to utilize the fats the hemp oil contains effectively.
Hemp oil also contains omega fatty acids which are known to fight against inflammation.
In addition to the actual pain itself affecting your pet’s quality of life (the inability or resistance to stand, walk, etc), their mental quality of life is affected as well.
Think about what would happen if you had joint pain. Your joints would ache. You would have trouble standing up or sitting down. This could result in us, as people, becoming depressed, upset, angry, and/or anxious. Similar with our dogs and cats. Our pets quality of mind is also a critical part of their overall health. Â
